Humanize an AI cover letter

A cover letter should explain why this role fits your experience. AI drafts often use broad praise and familiar claims in place of those details. Editing the wording helps, but the strongest material still has to come from you.

Find the generic claims

Phrases such as “a proven track record”, “a passion for innovation” and “the perfect fit” can appear in almost anyone’s letter. Ask what evidence follows each claim. If the answer is another broad claim, make a note to add a project, a responsibility or a result you can explain in an interview.

Read each paragraph against the role’s requirements. Choose one or two examples that show relevant work, then explain your contribution. Keep the letter focused on what the employer needs to understand before an interview. Cut praise that could be sent to any company without a change.

Start light or allow a larger rewrite

Ink offers Light, Balanced and Strong strengths, with Work, Casual or Academic context. Work is a reasonable starting point for a cover letter. Light suits a draft whose structure already works. Balanced changes more phrasing. Strong allows larger changes to the wording and rhythm, so spend more time reviewing how it presents your experience.

Ink uses the shared Ink model today. Personal voice profiles are coming soon. A rewrite does not learn a personal style from your application or supply the experience that makes the letter specific to you.

Add your own specifics afterward

Read the rewrite against the job description. Add the relevant work you actually did, why it mattered and what you learned. Keep the scope honest. Do not turn helping with a project into leading it, or a team result into a personal one. Remove praise you would struggle to support in a conversation.

Ink checks names, numbers, dates, quotes, citations and links and warns if one goes missing. Compare shows what changed. These checks can miss changes, so verify company names, job titles, dates and results yourself. The writing guide has a review checklist. For other work writing, see AI emails and work updates.
